The Post Where I Break Into Song and Dance

One of the disadvantages of living way out here in the Wild West is that sometimes we miss out on the latest and greatest the world has to offer. Like there's this new thing I keep hearing about called electricity. Anyone know what that is and if I should get it?

Actually, this is what I am referring to:

No I don't mean Les Miserable the musical, I mean this specific DVD. In case you are like me and have been in the dark for the past year and a half, this is the 25th anniversary CONCERT at the O2. It is oh-mazing. I think that if I would have attended it live, I would have blissfully died in my sleep that night. It's that good. You should go buy it, right now! Oh wait, maybe finish reading the blog first. It's been many, many years since I've seen a live production of Les Mis, but I've fallen in love with it all over again. I'm even going to read the unabridged novel before the new movie comes out. Or at least I'm going to try. I might need eye surgery by the end to uncross my eyes, but it will be worth it.

But this has made me think: we've never talked about musicals before! How could I have missed such a fun topic?

So ... My very favorite musicals are:
Annie
Okalahoma
Phantom
Les Mis
Grease
Camelot
And High School Musical (Just kidding. But, I am super glad that they got a new generation to love musicals. Way to go Disney!)

Least favorite musical: Mamma Mia. (Not that I saw it live. But the movie didn't do it for me, even though I'm an ABBA fan.) But this does make me think: has any other musician had an entire play written based on their music? Guess whose songs I would love to see made into a musical? Josh Groban's! Especially when you hear one of his songs sung in harmonizing parts by the men of the Mo Tab. Beautiful! (And yes, I know Josh didn't write that song, but dude, he owns that song. And by owns, I don't mean he has the intellectual rights, I mean he OWNS it. Capishe?) Since I like to think I can do things I'm not qualified to do, I bet I could write a Grobtastic Musical--at least the play part. I would need someone musical to help me with the musicalish parts. Any volunteers?

Wow, I finally figured out how to embed a video in a post. I feel so accomplished!   And guess who else I would like to write a musical for? Michael Jackson! Not because I'm a major fan, but because the rest of the world is and because the costumes would be killer. I mean Thriller. Seriously, can you picture how cool that musical would be? Any volunteers to help on that one?

I just posted a MJ picture underneath a Mo Tab video. I bet that's an all-time first.

Are you a fan of musicals? Which ones are your favorites? What songs are your favorites from said musicals?

If you could be in a musical, what part would you love to play? I would love to be Miss Hannigan from Annie. I love her!

And then answer me this: which musicians would you like to see their music set to a play?

Oh, and I forgot to mention this last week: we're just going to continue on with the once-a-month prize for awhile. I'm really enjoying not having to mail things out as much. Did you guys know I have an aversion to the post office? I think it's because I tripped and fell there as a small child and it scarred me for life (literally).

I absolutely LOVE musiscals!!!!!!! My all time favorites are an enormously long list....so just to name a few: 7 Brides for 7 Brothers (love Benjamin), Meet Me In St. Louis, Kiss Me Kate (Howard Keels voice is awesome), Hello Dolly (Barbara is awesome in this one), Calamity Jane (love Doris Day), Annie Get Your Gun (fun songs), Phantom, Blue Hawaii (love Elvis) and Newsies (Love ChrisTian Bales accent)!!!!

I also love musical soundtracks even if I don't love the movie, like Oklahoma or Yentl or if I haven't seen the musical like...Wicked or Oliver!

I would love to play Dolly in Hello Dolly, especially to sing "You go your way, and I'll go mine". And it would be fun to be Elphaba or Mary Poppins on Broadway.

What a fun topic! But I have no idea what musician I would like to have a musical...ok how about Elvis!! (i was born in the wrong time!)

I can't believe I forgot today was Tuesday! I'm so late! Anyway, I'm not a big musical person. I know, if Katie knew this, I'd be in so much trouble. I only have a select few I like and the rest I have no desire to watch. So, here are the ones I like:

My Fair Lady
Grease
Phantom of the Opera

That's it. Don't hate me, but even Hugh Jackman isn't enough to make me watch Les Mis. Gasp! Isn't that blasphemy or something? Please forgive me, Hugh. You're still very attractive and I could watch Wolverine over and over.

Nicole, I should send you my Humanities packet to read. Maybe you'll like musicals then. Anyway, I adore musicals I just don't come by many opportunities to watch them. I love all of the one's that I've watched! Well I guess that's not true. Anyway here are my favorites; Annie, Singing in the Rain, Music Man, Phantom of the Opera, Les Mis, 7 Brides for 7 Brothers, and Bride and Predjudice. I'm a big arts person so I love all sorts of fine arts!
My favorite songs from said musicals in same order are Maybe, Moses Supposes his Nose is Roses, tie between Madam Librarian and Wells Fargo Wargon, I'm thinking All I Ask of You, Prologue: A Work(I like the rhythms), Bless her Beautiful Hide, and No Life Without Wife. If you haven't seen Bride and Predjudice, you definately should.
I don't know who I'd want to be because everyone has their pros and cons. Oh! I love Wicked but I was in Treatment when I saw it so I don't remember it too well.
Oh, don't make me choose! I love too many musicians! Jonas Brothers! I just would love to see that because I've never been to a concert and I've adored them since before they're very first CD came out which is not the self-titled one by the way. I need to go to a devotional so I gotta go but this was fun. I was going to say "happy 9/11" then I realized that's the wrong thing to say.

LivingstonslifeinMT: I bow to you, oh musical one. You would make the perfect Dolly. I have not seen Newsies. Honestly, I didn't know Batman could sing! Look how much I learned today.

Nicole: you lost your top spot! I was beginning to worry that you'd been abducted by a musical theater troop intending to indoctrinate you! So if Avengers II was a musical, would you watch it? I wont tell Hugh what you said, but Jenna is going to be all over you! :)

Devreethecollegechick: HI! So glad you had time for us this week! How is it so far? Have you tripped over any cute guys? That's always a great conversation starter. Did you see that Nick Jonas is in the Les Mis 25th anniversary concert CD? It's almost like your wish came true! Unhappy 9/11 to you too.

Oh Lori, I've been on the verge of tears a few times already and it's only the second day of classes. The talent show had a lot of cute singing boys whom I wouldn't mind running into again but I did literally trip and fall resulting in ripped jeans that I can't wear to class and bloodied knee. I did see that! when it was on TV my mom DVRed it so I could see him. :)

Devree- I actually took Humanities (twice) and FA 100 and I still just can't do musicals. Sorry. But, I do promise you're going to love being at BYU-I and hang in there, because it gets better! However, if you're as big of a baby as I am, there are always going to be classes that bring you to tears. Just hopefully not due to stress or disappointment. :)

Lori- Avengers, a musical? As long as it still has all of the same hotties in it, then I probably would. Can you imagine, Thor and his wonderful accent singing? Or even better- Robert Downey Jr! Yeah, I'd probably have to watch it.

I liked your video--I hadn't heard them sing this song before. I thought you were going to put them on singing The Prayer, which I've heard them do. I love that you love Josh Groban's music so much : ).

One of my favorite musicals is done all with music from Ira Gershwin--it's called "Crazy for You". I got to see it on Broadway, it was awesome. My favorite song from that is probably "But Not for Me".

I love musicals! I got my kids to watch 7 Brides for 7 Brothers with me the other day. Yee haw!

I also love Phantom, Annie, HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 1, 2, & 3! (yes, I do!), oh and my most favorites of all time that I haven't seen on stage are probably "The Little Prince" and "Hans Christian Anderson"; and I LOVE LOVE LOVE "The Secret Garden", and I LOVE "Chess", and I really like "The King and I", and I love Oklahoma too, and I love any musical with Gene Kelly in it, and I am feeling the need to go on a musical-watching spree. Great idea!

I do like Les Mis but I wish I could see a somewhat edited version of it (Master of the House-blech)--that's why I really like the concert version of it--and OF COURSE you knew that Hugh Jackman is starring in the new Les Mis movie that's coming out, right??

I just know that after I post this response I'm going to think of ten more musicals that I should have included on my favorites list...oh well ; ).

If I could play a role in a musical, I'd want to be Annie. Rags to riches? Yes, please ; ).

Oh, and I love Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder, and I love...okay, I'll stop for now.

Devree: there is nothing wrong with crying unless you are a tattooed,300 pound man on a Harley at Sturgis. (Or at Virginia City for that matter.) Hang in there cute girl: you are going to have so much fun! Sorry about your knee. I hope you remembered to pack band aids.:) Hugs!

Nicole: I about died laughing. Yes, someone should teach Thor to sing. How awesome would that be?

JazznJenna: OK, I'll admit it, HSM 1 was pretty cute. I didn't ever ask my kids to change the channel when it was on and I might have watched over the top of my laptop a time or two. You have the curls for Annie, so you'd be a shoe-in. Can I kick you in the rear when I'm Miss Hannigan? Who is this Hugh guy everyone keeps talking about?

I'm disappointed that no one has favored Xanadu. What kind of uncultured readers do you attract, Lori?

The heavenly words of Les Mis have been going non-stop through my head for a while, "Take my hand, I'll lead you to salvation. Take my love, for love is everlasting. Remember the truth that once was spoken, to love another person is to see the face of God." That encapsulates my recent talk on friendship.

I would love to take my kids to Lion King.

There is NOTHING like the thrill of live talent - stimulating auditory and visual processes. I think that your soul reacts to musicals because it requires both your body and your spirit to absorb and understand them, and we know that your body and spirit make up your soul. They are thrilling to the core!

Devree, I'm sooooo sad about your fall! I hope you aren't in too much pain. It sounds like you had some speed or a steep hill to cause so much damage. Were you long boarding? I hope you are ok! How would Pollyanna put her spin on this?

I think a musical by Coldplay would be kind of fun!

Janice said...

I hate commenting after Paulashawn! I'll attempt to sound somewhat intelligent!

If I would have been asked this question when I was 16 I would have said Xanadu! Not so sure now!

I'm not very cultured, I guess, because I haven't seen many musicals. I did see Phantom and it was great, of course! I like Sound of Music and 7 Brides for 7 Brothers. I'm probably the only person around who hasn't seen a musical Les Mis, but I do love the movie.

Do animated movies count as musicals? I love the music from Anastasia-we even have the cd. Mulan has some great tunes, too!

Lori Folkman said...

Oh, Xanadu: how I once loved you. But then I watched you as an adult and I realized you were more cheesy than the enormous bucket of cheese balls Sage got for his birthday. Still love the music though. And the clothes.

PaulaShawn: change your username to PhilosophicalPaulaShawn. You put us all to shame.

Janice: How funny, I've been singing "In The Dark of the Night," the past few days and I haven't seen Anastasia in years! Animated musicals are the best! We've listened to the soundtrack from Tangled thousands of times. Next time Paulashawn goes to the San Fran, you need to hide in her trunk and go too!

Caitlin said...

Well, my mother just about summed up the comment I was going to make. Thanks a lot! I was going to say I how I loved Anastasia and Phantom and the Sound of Music. I get chills every time I hear "Once upon a December". And I've just spent about 5 minutes trying to decide which Phantom song I like best, but I give up. I love them all!
I second PaulaShawn's idea. The world NEEDS a Coldplay musical. I mean, if we can get one from the Beatles or ABBA, why not Coldplay?

I guess it's good not to be *too* cultured, since I will never be exposed to that certain musical that won last year's Tony award. I groan just thinking about it!

Lori Folkman said...

Caitlin: You and your mom have to share thoughts since you can no longer share clothes. :) There's a Beatles musical? See, you are cultured! I third the idea for a Coldplay musical, but holy cow it would be long! Don't they have a hundred billion songs? It would have to have at least 3 intermissions. :)

Hi, Lori. I'm not dead, after all. My favorite musical is Aida. I also love Wicked, Les Mis, The Sound of Music, Rigoletto (is that considered a musical? "them pigs is family"), Annie, Singing in the Rain, and lots more. I even liked ABBA-the live musical. The movie version kind of sucked, except for the presence of Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth. I've never seen the musical Jane Eyre--can you believe someone made a musical out of it?--but I love the music.

I'm not a performer, and my own child has been known to ask me to stop singing, so I'd better not choose a part to play.

Lori Folkman said...

Sally: I really was worried that you had melted in the hot Arizona summer. So glad to see you again! There's a Jane Eyre musical? See how in the woods I am? I love that your daughter asks you not to sing: my daughter does that too, but when she does, I just keep singing even louder! :)

Sally said...

Wait, wait! Your comment made me remember another favorite musical: Into the Woods. As for the heat, let the record reflect that today was the first day in way, way too long that I didn't break into a sweat putting my groceries in the car. It was only 100--we're finally beginning to cool off.

Devree said...

Lori: I did pack bandaids! 100 of them! Most are solid colors like green, orange, purple, but some have superheroes on them like Wolverine, Hulk, Iron Man, and (my favorite) Capt. America.

PaulaShawn: Don't cry for me (Argentina! ;)) Don't you know? BYU-I is all steep hills! Well, maybe not steep...Me? Longboard? HA! Like I'm that coordinated. No I was just walking and didn't pick up my toes enough. Playing the glad game, I would say "After posting it on Facebook, Jeanni Jones saw, took me shopping, and spoiled me." There's something good in everything.

Lori Folkman said...

Sally: Now I have to add another musical to my list of "need to see," even though I really see the woods every day. Cooled off to 100? That is insane. I don't think we got over 95 this summer.

Devree: Glad you had band-aids, even if you don't have any with Disney princesses. Those ones come with a built-in kiss. Glad you have a good friend who helped make it all-better!
