It's What's on the Inside

Two weeks ago when I posted about back-to-school fashions, I forgot to mention that my post coincided with Fashion Week in New York. Or maybe I didn't know until later that week that it was Fashion Week, but I'm not going to admit that or you might think I'm a backwoods hillbilly, like I admitted to last week. Anywho, I read this article about what runway models do to "slim down" for Fashion Week. Can I just say I'm so glad I decided to be an author instead of a model? Hahahahaha. Ha. Ha ha.

Runways models have to do all sorts of crazy diets, take pills and injections and exercise nonstop to make sure every bone on their back is protruding when they strut down the runway. Hey--you know what would help solve this problem? Clothes that actually cover their bodies! If they were given more than a doily to wear, they wouldn't have to worry about being so darn skinny. But in addition to the starvation diets, they are oftentimes encouraged to do meth and speed to speed up their metabolisms. Scary sad.

Not only is this look so not attractive, it also makes them weak. Proof: Have you seen how often they fall down?

Or maybe it's the shoes?

Back to the previously mentioned article. As sad as it was to read about drug abuse and extreme diets, this was what appalled me: some models even eat cotton balls to feel full. COTTON BALLS! How could you knowingly put fluff into your system? Won't it like ... plug things up??? Maybe those gals aren't at the age where every day they have to think: fiber, fiber, fiber. (TMI? Sorry.)

So if it is true what they say that it's what's on the inside that counts: runway models are full of fluff. (I'm just saying that for the purpose of the blog topic. I don't mean to categorize, nor do I mean to judge. I'm sure they are as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside.)

If you are what you eat then this would be true as well: since you, my BlogAway friends, are all so sweet, would it be safe to assume that you eat sweetness on occasion? I'm going to say yes, because I don't know anyone who can refuse sweet treats all the time. We can all be strong and have willpower against the things which are not good for us occassionally: but all the time? Don't think so.

What are the sweet treats that keep you from being runway-model thin?

The treats I can't refuse are:

No Bake Cookies. Unfortunately Teen #2 likes to make these A LOT, and his are the very best. Sometimes we even eat leftovers for breakfast. Hello, they are made of oatmeal! Don't be so critical!

Pumpkin cookies, bread, bars, rolls ... basically anything pumpkin, except for pumpkin pie. (I get the shudders just thinking about pumpkin pie. Is that weird?)

Speaking of pie: oh my, I like pie. But it has to be homemade. Or close to homemade. Mom my makes the best pie. Ever. I'm counting down the days until Thanksgiving.

Peanut M&M's. And Pretzel M&M''s too. I don't buy them because then I eat them. Funny how that works.

Red Velvet Cake

And lastly ... I have a huge weakness for a certain soda with Splenda. Does that count? And does that mean I am full of fake sweetness? Oh dear, that's not good.

Tell me: what sweet treats make you go weak in the knees like a model on a runway?

Three words: chocolate minty brownies. My friend just blogged about hers today, and I'm a little weak in the knees because of it. www.icyviolets.com

I do love chocolate, but love it even more when it's accompanied by mint, fruit, or white creamy stuff. The only way I really like donuts is if they have chocolate on top and creamy stuff in the middle. Oh wait, I like powdered fruit-filled ones too, a little. OK, no, I doubt I could ever eat a whole one. But those first few bites are amazing. (Have you seen the new Kid History -Kid Snippet about the basketball time out and the donuts? SOOO cute!)

I like Oatmeal no-bakes too! I make them on Sunday nights, and they don't last long.

What's in my secret stash? Dark chocolate by Dove or Hershey's Bliss is ideal. I also love some seasonal candies like Peeps (especially dried out ones), Robin Eggs, and Candy Corns.

Why else would Christmas be my favorite holiday--we get to make candy houses!

I can't say no to almost any kind of sweets out there. And the sad thing is, I'm the strong one in our house. Steve has the biggest sweet tooth of anyone I've ever met. I usually do good avoiding candy, unless I'm at work. I have a chocolate and Pepsi stash to keep me happy on those days when, well, I guess like Twix says, "need a moment."

I won't eat anything with dark chocolate. Ugh, that stuff gives me the shudders. Not good. At all. But as far as favorite candies go, anything fruity or chocolate with caramel is a safe bet that I'll like it.

Baked goodies are an entirely different story. The last few months I've had the worst cravings and I just want cake or cookies. I don't know what it is. But my gift and curse is that baked goodies is what I'm best at cooking and enjoy cooking most. Like cinnamon rolls, cookies, pies..... mmm.... and we wonder why we need to join a gym! Steve makes good no bakes, but I really don't like them, so when he makes them, he's on his own when it comes to eating them. I don't know why, I guess I just like baked things.

Mmm... now I'm officially more hungry than when I got up. Back to my chocolate chip cinnamon roll.

I think my list will be much shorter if I just list the things I CAN pass on...starbursts, skittles, fruit flavored licorice,Hersheys chocolate, almond joys/mounds and anything with a coffee taste. Sad! So sad!

I'm sorry to post twice Lori (I really wish editing comments was an option), but I have to add just a tiny bit. Chocolate chip cookies with nuts are my favorite thing in the whole world and I can not resist them (except for the hard ones). And rice crispy treats. Those are my two very favorites.

Things I can pass on: cake (sometimes, unless the frosting is awesome), popsicles, licorice (red or black), and creme brulee--gag. And I seem to have a white-flour aversion lately, so cinnamon rolls would be okay if made with whole-wheat flour (blasphemy, I know!).

Thanks for letting me talk about this stuff. It feels yummy, and costs me no calories! Now I think I'll go have a cookie. (kidding!)

JazznJenna: Wow, her brownies are drool-worthy. I lack the presentation whenever I make something. It might taste good, but it never looks good. Does anyone else have that problem? Have you tried the candy corn M&M's? I almost bought them, but then I figured I'd rather not be addicted to something else. As for your second comment: maybe we could share a batch of chocolate chip and nut cookies. No one else in my family likes nuts in their desserts. Does that mean I'm the only one who is nuts? Probably.

Nicole: so you are saying that Steve is the sweetest guy out there? I might have to agree. He definitely has the sweetest smile! That huckleberry dessert you posted on FB the other day looked heavenly. Was that cheesecake? That is another dessert I can't resist!

LivingstonslifeinMT: I agree with your list of passable items, except the Almond Joys. I'll eat anything with almonds in them. Except for maybe sushi.

I'm sure Lori could have answered this for me, but I'll respond anyway. Chocolate Chip Cookies (homemade) are my downfall in this world. Brownies and pie are pretty dang good too but again only homemade. All that store stuff doesn't do it for me. Good thing I'm a hermit and love to bake so I can stay off that runway. I'm certain I'd fall over due to the shoes!

That picture of the model is horrible. What is beautiful about looking like you just left a concentration camp?

I love lots of desserts. I don't think I could name a top favorite, but here are some that are at the top of my list: cheesecake, Heath, Butterfinger, Baby Ruth, or Twix chocolate bars, circus peanuts, and chocolate covered pretzels. YUM!

But there are some things I won't eat if I have a choice. Including: frosting (there are certain exceptions for that one), licorice, jello, banana pudding, any orange sweets, Laffy Taffy (except banana), any candy that is rum, wine, or coffee flavored, things coated in sugar, and I can never eat more than two or three of something sweet.(Sometimes I can eat more than two small candies, though.) Well, that's it!:)

Well I like to eat them a few at a time or I get really sick. When everyone was trying to fatten me up after St. Jude's they gave me whole plates full of sweets like cookies and stuff. I just couldn't eat them! But i love Rice Crispy treats! thats something I can eat several of and not get sick!
Any sort of baked good that has nuts(ie chocolate chip cookies, brownies, cinnamon rolls, any kind of cookie)makes me happy. Apple pie's my favorite pie, that was my birthday "cake" this year. Oh! Leslie Olsen, my neighbor, makes the BEST pumpkin cookies that I've ever tasted! Ooooh and my favorite candy is Almond Joys! I don't do dark chocolate...i think it's bitter and somewhat yucky....Sorry if I offended all you dark chocolate lovers, but it just doesn't float my boat. Anyway, that's what I love. I didn't get to post yesterday because I went on a date but I still got to comment!

I don't know where it came from, but many people (I should say too many people) for some reason think that my family is a group of sugar averse and only healthy food consumers. That is so not the case! Let me tell you what 7 year old daughter ate on Sunday. She decided that playing was more important to her than eating breakfast before church, so that's what she did. We got home and snacked after church as we normally do, but she again decided that playing was more important to her, so that's what she did. I heard her at about 4:00 migrate into the kitchen, where she had some milk and nilla wafers. I had planned to serve Lori's delectible sweet pulled pork, but when I saw how much food we had in the fridge I decided we needed to finish up the other stuff before making more, so for dinner we were just going to have a potpourri of things. But then I noticed that there was a triple fudge chocolate cake from Smiths on the counter, and decided that the kids should have that as an option for dinner as well. Of course they decided that was quite enough, no need to dig through the fridge for anything else, and I was happy to help them be happy, so we gathered around the table and they feasted on cake. They kept singing, "Mom is great, gives us chocolate cake!"

Then I had some, I mean lots of ice cream. And probably a fudge bar or two. That's what I go to, and go there too often.

Maybe people think that because I don't bake I am a health nut. In reality it's that I'm much too lazy to bake anything.

bigskyboys: you keep saying you can't stay out of chocolate chip cookies, but the problem is that you don't LOOK like you are a cookie-aholic so no one believes you! You're going to have to pack on the pounds if you want to be credible. That model does look like she was a concentration camp victim: in fact I was going to post a picture from a concentration camp, but it made me too sad. Poor people. They would have loved to eat a cotton ball!

Didi: Hi! Glad you shared your list of sweetness with us! Funny that you don't like banana Laffy Taffy; that's the only flavor I'll eat. But still, it gets stuck in my teeth for hours and then people think I have yellow teeth. I'm glad you are staying away from the rum and wine flavored stuff, as you are much too young for that. :)

Devree: Mmm, Rice Crispy Treats! They shouldn't be that easy to make because that can be so dangerous! I pass on dark chocolate too, even though they say it is better for you. If you're going to have something yummy, why worry about it being the healthier option? A date?!! Wahoo Devree! And you've only been there a week. Way to go girlfriend!

PaulaShawn: people think you are a health nut because you are almost as skinny as that model.(But in a good way!) I love how poetic your children are--or maybe they were high on sugar! Fudge bars are good for you because they are full of calcium--so see, you are a health nut!

thanks for replying, although I meant that I DO like banana Laffy Taffy. Strawberry and grape make me gag, along with green apple. We should find a store that sells banana Laffy Taffy by itself and then share it with each other.

Unknown said...

Hahaha, oh yeah, all the boys are fighting over me! You guys find the banana Laffy Taffys and I'll read all the jokes and laugh like they're so hilarious when they're not!

Lori Folkman said...

Didi: Doh! I guess I need to brush up on my reading comprehension! If we can't find a bag of all-banana, maybe we can give the other flavors out for Halloween.

Devree: It doesn't need to be a fight. Just make them line up in an orderly fashion and date them on a first-come, first-served basis. :) I would love to hear your laugh!
