I'm Sensing It's Christmas

You guys: I have some very big news. It's December! (Was I the first to tell you? I hope I was.)

This month has the tendancy to get very busy, so I'm going to keep blog posts simple. I won't ramble on and on and on to make a basic point. I will be direct and simply say what needs to be said. I won't make you read endless chatter. No siree (hey, is that where Apple got Siri's name? Hmm.), I will not type just for the sake of typing. I will be brief. (Really, I will. Promise.)

So this week, let's do some word association, Christmas style. But I don't want just words; I want sentences. I will do mine first so you can see what I'm after. But I get to use pictures to help me out and you don't. Normally I would feel bad about this injustice, but I have a bad case of writers block right now and I need the pictures, so I feel no guilt. Sorry. (Wait, I guess I don't need to say sorry if I feel no guilt. I take that sorry back.) (Now I do feel guilty for being unapologetic. Sorry about that. I meant it that time.) Anywho, here's my example:

Christmas sounds like: A completely silent forest covered by a thick blanket of soft snow.

Picture from last winter. We are the great snow-less wonder this year.
Christmas smells like: A freshly cut pine tree and cinnamon scented pine cones.

Our pine cones are cinnamon scented around here: how about yours? Picture from Imperfectly Polished.  BTW, our dog keeps taking our wreath (our only Christmas decoration thus far) off the door and chewing on it. Like she can't just go chew on a pine tree in the yard. Makes no sense.

Christmas looks like: White Christmas lights dotting the eves of a cabin, nestled in the snowy trees.

Christmas tastes like: Red Velvet Cheesecake. Or it will taste like red velvet cheesecake. I've never had it before, but it's waiting for me in my freezer. I will have more than one slice.

Cheesecake picture appears courtesy of Schwans.

Christmas feels like: Fuzzy new fleece pajamas.

I am comfy, here me roar. PJ's courtesy of Old Navy.

There are no wrong answers and I'm not doing a psychiatric evaluation! Just write down the first thing that comes to your mind. Here's the list again:

Christmas sounds like:
Christmas smells like:
Christmas looks like:
Christmas tastes like:
Christmas feels like:

See how easy I was on you this week?  You're welcome! :)

Christmas sounds like: The cute little voices of my kids learning new Christmas songs to surprise me with. If it's "Marshmellow World in the Winter" or "In a Little Stable" I love hearing them practice the songs.

Christmas smells and tastes like: baked goods of all sorts that filter into our house throughout the month from our neighbors...and the yummy treats that I make with my kids. One of our favorite traditions.

Christmas looks like: Lots of pretty lights and trees and hopefully a little bit of snow. Happy smiling people trying be more loving and giving through the season.

Christmas feels like: Love. Spending time with those we love and focus a little more on others and less on ourselves. It also feels comfy, snuggly, lazy and cozy.

-Heather-Christmas sounds like the faint songs of our Saviors life in the background, and the jingle of bells and delight of gleeful children as they enjoy the beautiful season.
Christmas smells like smoke from the wood burning stoves (wish I had one) gingerbread and cinnimon steaming on the stove. And fresh cut greenery to accent a homes love.
Christmas tastes like savory pumpkin, peppermint and chocolate treats
Christmas feels like the only time of year that everyone you see has a smile on their face, the one time of year that people remember the attonement and the meaning of love, peace, and forgiveness.

Hi Lori...here goes nuttin' (as in what I'm gettin' for Christmas):

Christmas sounds like choirs singing like angels with bells and flutes in the background. Except I'm not playing the flute because I don't own one anymore, that's why I'm in the choir.

Christmas smells like the chocolate balls that melted in the bottom of my stocking. Not sure why they like to melt there, they just do. But that doesn't stop me from eating what's salvageable. And let's make that minty chocolate, because that's even happier : ).

Christmas looks like one big mess of wrapping paper and new games and pajama-clad people all over the living room floor, with special nuts and candy within arms' reach, and our beautiful decorated tree with colored lights on it right next to me.

Christmas tastes like fruit and Sees candy for breakfast. YUM!

Christmas feels like so much anticipation and happiness you want to explode, and freeze that feeling for at least one extra day.

Christmas sounds like: carols and laughter.
Christmas smells like: Freshly peeled oranges (cuz we always get oranges and bananas in our stockings) and a wood-burning fireplace.
Christmas looks like: smiles and colorful lights.
Christmas Feels like warmth and joy of being close to loved ones.
I should be going to bed but I couldn't miss out on this and I can't wait to go home for Christmas. "I'll be home for Christmas! You can count on me..."

Nicole: I was a little worried about your Christmas music taste when you mentioned Alvin and the Chipmunks, but then you redeemed yourself by mentioning Josh Groban. I approve. :) I'm so glad you get to go home for the holidays! I will pray for snow.

Anne: Your "feels like" line gave me goose bumps! So perfect. And then I felt like I put the wrong answer on mine by putting something superficial like fleece jammies. Maybe if I gave others fleece jammies, I would also get the warm fuzzies. I must try that. Who wants jammies for Christmas?

LStevens: Hi! I've missed you! Look how awesome your senses are! Do you write poetry? Mmm, hot chocolate with peppermint. That's another way to get the warm fuzzies. ;)

Team C: I waited until Nov 12th before listening to Christmas music, so you win the early bird prize for that one. Oh I love PB trees. I hope Santa remembers those for my stocking. I know you miss me and my kids so much it makes you cry. We miss you terribly too. Oh wait ... were you referring to your flesh and blood sister? Um ... that was awkward.

Heather: I love the smell of wood burning stoves too, but that's probably just because I don't have one. You were right on the money with your last line: you worded that beautifully. I love the peace of this season!

JazznJenna: Would you rather get nuttin' or a lump of coal? I think I would rather have the coal, but I doubt you have to worry about either. I think my chocolate would melt if I put it in my socks too. Maybe you can find a better place to store it. JK ... Just wondering if it's because your stocking is hung over a fire. That might make the chocolate melt. :)

Little Miss Devree: I haven't gone caroling in ages! That's probably because they kicked me off the caroling squad because I could never get the "Ha, Ha, Ha," line right after "Laughing all the way." I would always do "Ho, Ho, Ho," which I guess has a copyright on it or something. Yay- you get to go home too! Should I pray for snow for you? And bananas in stockings? I've never heard of that! Is it because you live in a more tropical location? :)

Christmas sounds like my family singing along with the head-bobbing tune God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman/We Three Kings by BNL & Sarah McLachlan. It also sounds like Donny Osmond's O Holy Night, Handel's Messiah, and my family (trying) to sing along with carols on the piano.

It also sounds a lot like heaven because Sissel sings to me.

Christmas smells like my evergreen candle ('cause even our freshly cut tree isn't real aromatic). It also smells like Holiday French Toast baking in the oven while we open gifts.

Christmas looks like eager faces that really want to believe. It also looks like our tree is a little too big for the room it's in.

Christmas feels like the anticipation and excitement of a new baby's arrival, only this one has the power to carry our burdens, heal our broken hearts, and replace our sorrow for sin with hope and joy.

I LOVE the Christmas season!

Christmas sounds like carols and bells ringing.

Christmas smells all good things baking.

Christmas looks like twinkling lights and bright red ribbons.

Christmas tastes like peppermint, toffee, carmels & sugar cookies.

Christmas feels like a warm fire and love from those who mean the most.

PoeticPaulaShawn:How'd you get Sissel to serenade you? That is so unfair. Althought I don't actually want to hear her sing in person because it will mean that I'm dead. But, on the positive side,it would also mean that I made it to heaven. Yay!

bigskyboys: I hope my "Christmas tastes like" will include tasting your caramels very soon! Hint, hint! I wouldn't mind some sugar cookies either. (Sorry, I shouldn't reply when I have the munchies.) You didn't mention snow at all. Should I be worried--do you know something I don't?

Christmas sounds like silver bells swaying in the wind in front of a warm house, clinking together, and the cheerful caroling coming from joyful neighbors.

Christmas smells like the nuts all in a box on the table, as well as in our full felt stockings.

Christmas looks like a happy family, trailing down the stairs in their pjs, and their hair strewn everywhere. Although the enthusiastic smiles on their faces sends all attention from their hair back to their glittering eyes and shining teeth.

Christmas feels like the tangled sheets of my bed as I try to wrestle my way out of bed, to get downstairs in time to hear delighted squeals as we see the gifts, perfectly wrapped packages under the tree.

Christmas tastes like warm hot cocoa as my tongue rejoices in sending the chocolatey liquid through my freezing body covered in snow.

Christmas feels like excitement, love, family togetherness, compassion for others and warmtha nd happiness. Everything good!

BuddingAuthorDidi: your Christmas sounds idyllic! Cracking nuts at Christmas reminds me of my childhood--I liked the nuts more than the boxes of chocolates! (Go figure that I'm a little nutty now!)

Janice: do you think the bell ringers get carpal-tunnel? Or maybe the cold numbs them and prevents them from injury. Oh ... pb cookies with the star on top! How I love them! Did I tell you I forgot to add the sugar to them one year? They were not quite as tasty--imagine that.
