Back in the Day

Well guys, I survived getting old. I didn't have to go in for a hip replacement, nor did I have to visit a plastic surgeon, so ... 40 is good!

One thing we old people like to do is sit around on the front porch and talk about the good old days. All of our statements begin with the phrase "Remember when ...."  For example:

Remember when ... watermelon had seeds?

Remember when ... people used their cell phones for talking?

You've heard old people speak in this manner, right? Well, pull up a rocking chair and let's do some reminiscing. I'll go first, because I'm a conversation hog like that.

Remember when ...

People wore mom jeans, which acted like a girdle, thus eliminating the dreaded "muffin top?"

Nickle Creek made awesome bluegrass music?

Wearing Princess Leah dog ears was THE hairstyle all the groovy girls wore?

Summer blockbuster movies actually made money?

People worked out because it was fun and good for them instead of working out because they
want others to worship their perfectly sculpted bodies?

Pong was the coolest video game ever?

         Facebook was a teen hangout?

         It rained?

I could fill up the VW for 25 bucks?

I could fill up the Suburban for less than $100?

You could only watch cartoons on Saturday?

          I could write?

Salads had to be made "from scratch?"

Ah ...

What do you remember about the good old days? What has changed for the worse since you were a kid, or since last week if you can't remember anything about being a kid or have blocked it out due to being abused by your sister who was just a year older than you but never actually bigger than you?

Can you help me REMEMBER WHEN?

(I almost needed someone to help me remember that this is a prize week, but luckily a piston in my brain fired up before I hit "publish." So check back Thursday for the prize announcement!)

This looks like a fun game! I wanna play :).

Remember when...

...we got to romp around the back of the van and take turns laying on top of the luggage for naps when we went on family trips, because there were no seatbelt laws?

...people always answered your calls even if you had a funky unrecognizable number because there was no such thing as "caller ID"?

...you could use a VCR to tape your favorite shows so you could re-watch them (without having to pay the cable company $$$$$ every month for DVR)?

...you would sit by the radio all day so you could tape your favorite songs and make a RADICAL mix tape for yourself or someone you loved? (Oh wait, the technological advances in this area are actually a real improvement :)!)

...when you were a kid and it DIDN'T MATTER how many calories you ate in a day because you burned more than you ate no matter what?!

...you could buy ice cream by the scoop and you could treat yourself and a friend for just the spare change in your pocket?

...Barbie was just a fun doll to play with, not an impossible ideal shape which too many women aspire to attain?

...you were SUPPOSED to take a nap every day (AND get 10 hours of sleep every night)? Ha ha ha...

Those were the good old days! :)

Remember When...

There weren't any cell phones?

You dreaded calling a boy you liked because his parents might answer?

Gas was $1.35 when I started driving?

Facebook was only for college students? (That's when I joined)

Disney movies were actually hand drawn?

You could play outside for hours or go to a friends house without having to worry about who lived in the neighborhood or strangers driving by and snatching your kid?

Jenna: you brought back so many memories! Remember how you had to make sure your room was completely quiet when recording a song off the radio? And do you remember renting VCRs from the video store ... they were in a big suitcase and carrying them made you look like a spy? Do you remember playing with the Skipper doll and when you turned her arm, her chest would grow?!!! There's a great idea: someone should make plastic surgery Barbie and she actually ages but you get to fix all her flaws and make her look young again. Yes, that is exactly what the world needs.

Nicole: Do you remember the first cell phones? I think they weighed 5 pounds. That's why I had two so I could lift weights on both arms while chatting away for an excessive fee. And you called boys? For shame! I never did such a thing. Oh wait, yeah I did. Kids don't worry about that at all anymore, because they never even talk via phone. My kids won't even answer the house phone: it's like they don't know how! But as soon as they learn to spell, they learn to text. :)

Remember when...

People used full words instead of acronyms for everything? It kind of makes me wonder what our language will have evolved to in 100 years.

All you had to do to get ready for a family vacation is pack ONE suitcase. Unpacking was just as easy. Ahh.. those were the good old days :)

Remember when...
People actually MADE cookies from scratch.
Birthdays and Christmas were the most important events in your life.
Movies were appropriately rated R if they were even mildly immoral.
Cancer was a thing you couldn't recover from (that's a good thing now).
It wasn't scary to walk through downtown.
Paying the bills wasn't a concern.
Young actors didn't die every few months from OD-ing.
Having five Barbies and playing with them was cool.

I always look forward to Tuesdays! I get kinda bummed when it's the off-week.

Anne: IWBPITNC. What you don't know what that means? Well, look it up! Just kidding: it means It Will Be Pathetic In The Next Century. (It tried.) I also wonder in the next century if people won't capitalize new sentences and if they will type all their words together without spaces. OH WAIT: THAT'S ALREADY HAPPENED! I'm so glad I'm not an English teacher or I'd need some Valium.

Little Miss Devree: I DO remember when people made cookies from scratch .. almost like it was yesterday! (Teen #2 makes THE BEST chocolate chip cookies FROM scratch, and he makes them TOO often. (See Jenna's comment about the calorie thing.)(It's been so long since I've had an excuse to do the parenthesis within a parenthesis thing.)(Wahoo! I'm excited!)) Yay for cancer being able to go into remission! Modern medicine is AMAZING! And your last line made my heart warm like a big fluffy kitty (without fleas) sitting in a windowsill. Thanks friend!
